Sydney University Association of Biomedical Engineers

22-23 Exec

Meet the Exec Team

The SUABE executives are elected annually from our members and are comprised of a number of talented and dedicated individuals.

Meet your team for 2022-2023:

President Jess Perchman

We all have that one friend who, whenever you see them, is going on about their new science major - this is who we like to call our president… Jess. Just joking, she swears that this is the last time she transfers, it’s only going to be Biomedical Engineering and Data Science from here! Our lovely president (pres if you will) is so dedicated to SUABE that she dreams of new plans and events in her sleep. Watch out though, this spreadsheet queen and colour coding nerd is addicted to true crime podcasts, but we wouldn’t want any other crime psycho to lead our amazing society. When Jess isn’t busy grinding on the weekend, you can find her on a long drive to somewhere new. We’ve got the best pres ever so be prepared for an amazing year!

Vice President Nathan Lui

From sub com, to sponsorship, to now the Vice President of SUABE, it is the lovely and intelligent Nathan Lui! At first he may seem rather reserved and focused, but Nathan is a bundle of joy that is always down for a friendly chat. This man is amongst the highest of achievers, as he tackles 4 different jobs varying from tennis coaching to retail, on top of his biomedical engineering degree. His recently landed internship speaks to his strong ability to communicate effectively with industry, and reflects his drive, passion and hard-working nature. As a youngling, Nathan loved to build things, particularly with lego, that has now blossomed into aspirations of helping people through the use of technology. Aside from researching prosthetics and crafting ever-so professional emails in his spare time, Nathan has a hidden musical side. Not only can he play up to 6 instruments at a high level, but he is also self-taught at the drums and guitar, indicative of his innovative initiative! Initially interested in physiotherapy, but thankfully now apart of STEM, Nathan has always wanted to improve quality of life for others, and we are so lucky to have him as a strong figure and role model within SUABE.

Treasurer  Maddy Kan

Rising from the ranks of the 2021 subcommittee, I introduce to you our fantastic, ramen loving, money handling treasurer *drummmm rollllllll* Madeleine Kan. Maddy embodies all the character traits of a Virgo, she is practical, sensible, loyal and as a third-year she has a wealth of experience and passion for SUABE. When she’s not living it up in PNR you can find Maddy with her signature soy dirty chai in hand, working at local primary schools where she helps inspire the next generation of Biomedical Engineers. With her kind-hearted nature, love for BMET2400, interest in IP and ambitions to be a patent engineer, there is no doubt that Maddy will pour her entire heart and soul into SUABE just as much as she pours into her relationships, work and university.

Secretary Lexi Osler

Whether its singing songs while playing the piano, playing basketball, eating SUABE pancakes, looking after her pets or wanting to make a difference in people’s lives, she always puts her 100% in and tries her best to do whatever she puts her heart to. Her ultimate goal in life, no matter what she does is to help others and when she’s not knee deep in researching about diminishing diseases through genetic engineering or prosthetic treatments, she’s on the snow, snowboarding, or trying all the restaurants in Newtown, scouting out all the cuisine’s, especially, Italian and Japanese. She loves SUABE and always wants to be involved, carrying forward the SUABE visions while progressing in her passions for tissue engineering and medical science.

Sponsorship Officer  Isabella Goodwin

Selflessly deciding to bless not just SUWIE but also SUABE this year with her smiles, unending optimism and great conversation, our new sponsorship officer Izzy is sure to bring good vibes for SUABE members and big cheques for its bank account. While perhaps most widely known by her title as “most broken thing in PNR”, what isn’t so well known is that many of these injuries actually occurred in the pursuit of biomedical engineering excellence. The truth is, Izzy has been putting her body on the line for SUABE since the moment she arrived to PNR from the central coast. Devoted to her studies as much as she is to her friends, her family and to rehabbing her most recent injury, she somehow still finds time to have that random conversation outside BUDS about how she misses her chickens, or how ice matcha is the only acceptable Terracotta order. Semi-retired potentially pro dancer, part time college girl and blessed with the ability to flip the perfect pancake, with Izzy on the job it’s a sure thing SUABE’s sponsorships are in incredibly strong and capable hands this year.

Marketing Officer  Alessia Pernice

Everyone make some noise for SUABE's latest marketing officer, Alessia! This gorgeous girl with a creative flair and an undying love for ham and cheese croissants is determined to create some of SUABEs most beautiful merch, banners and more! Not only is she a marketing queen, Alessia is a programming goodness, doing a double degree in Biomedical Engineering and Computer Science! When she's not working to solve the world's most challenging problems in biomedical engineering, Alessia can be found blasting tunes from the latest musicals, getting lost in nature on a bushwalk or painting the world's next Mona Lisa. We are so excited to have such a determined, vivacious and creative marketing officer for SUABE this year!

Second Year Representatives

Adrian Freiburg

Our old friend, the electrical engineering stream, has gifted us their token student as our second-year representative; introducing the ever so charming, always hungry, always happy, ADRIAN FRIEBURG. Don’t be fooled by his love for a snack pack and the fact he’s off rowing more often than not, Adrian is a man of many talents. An absolute keyboard warrior, Adrian loves a good boogie on the dance floor but falls victim to his computer screen once the headphones are on and his long, luscious locks are swept off his face. Studying a gnarly double degree in electrical engineering and computer science, Adrian is well acquainted with a late-night grind either in PNR with the boys or at home in his oodie. Whilst Adrian was a late comer to the majestic oasis of PNR and the sublime social paradise of engineering, he has certainly made his mark as a hardworking, passionate and kind-hearted second-year. Whether flipping a snag at a SUEUA BBQ, checking bitcoin or being a dedicated SUWIE ally, Adrian is always up for a chat, good feed and study sesh (or study break). Next time you see Adrian in PNR, be sure to ask him about the famous Frieburg family honey. Covered in bee stings or not, Adrian is an integral part of our SUABE family.

Rakshana Natarajan

When she’s not bingeing FRIENDS, drinking coffee or snuggling up with her nose in a classic book, she’s helping out SUABE as our new second year rep! Rakshana is bright, empathetic and humble and would love to use her double degree in commerce and biomedical engineering to pursue a career in microfluidics and nanotechnology. She loves indulging in her favourite foods; Italian and Thai and exploring new cuisines, hoping to one day travel the world to continue to expand her knowledge of many diverse cultures. In her role as Second Year representative, she will put her leadership skills to use by running our subcommittee. Next time you see her hanging around PNR, ABS or Fisher Library don’t be afraid to say hi!

First Year Representatives

Grace O’Donnell

Creative, independent, and warm - meet Grace, one of our amazing First Year Reps on the SUABE team! With ambitions to be a CEO and the owner of her own business one day, Grace has hit the ground running at university, studying Biomedical Engineering and Commerce (Marketing). When she’s not spreading chill vibes in PNR or watching the latest medical documentaries, you’ll find her winning on the basketball court or planning how she’s going to travel the world on exchange. With enthusiasm and open-mindedness, she’s a social butterfly and will keep our community connected and growing. Come and say hi, she’ll be sure to give you a great coffee recommendation and brighten up your day!

Sam Barron

An outgoing, bubbly person whose contagious spirit makes everyone feel welcome. The newest addition to the executive team, Sam is passionate in the field of prosthetics and clinical engineering, and hopes to expand the biomedical network. As an avid nature lover, she enjoys spending her time at the beach, bushwalking, or retreating to the comforts of her farm. Sam is a caring, hard-working, and skilled multi-tasker, always working towards improving herself in her Biomedical Engineering and Commerce degree. She devotes time to developing her tastes in Italian, Mexican, and Thai cuisines – her ideal way to spend Friday nights. Sam hopes to travel the one day, but till then, she’s a loveable First Year rep!
